We believe all children deserve a rigorous college and career readiness curriculum, which is standards based and individualized to meet their needs; an extended school day and year for more time to learn, and a warm-strict school culture to promote character building, responsibility, integrity and perseverance. We believe in data-driven decision making which drives instruction and provides data for regular professional development and feedback loops. These core philosophies, combined with several strategic initiatives, will ensure students meet grade level standards and close the achievement gap.
We place a large emphasis on every student graduating from college. Each classroom is named after a college. From our chants to students' daily classroom discussions about college, each grade level has a particular firsthand college experience. The path to college at Starr Detroit is a combined emphasis on literacy and character education. Students spend three hours per day on focused literacy instruction, and each week begins with a character education assembly that is then incorporated into lessons taught throughout the week. After-school and intervention programs focus on giving students individualized attention and pushing them to excel. Above all, we believe 100% of our students can achieve.
