Starr Detroit Academy was founded on the principle that all students are capable of greatness. It is our responsibility as adults to create a caring and supportive environment which propels our young people to future success both academically, socially, and emotionally. These are the cornerstones of our school and the foundation of our Mission.
The mission of Starr Detroit Academy is to prepare students for academic mastery, college, work and life. Through our mission, each child will develop:
Strong character, self-confidence, and a deep awareness of their own strengths, interests, and ability.
A great academic foundation in the core subjects
The values and work ethic necessary for success in college, work and the community
We strive to always do our best and focus on accomplishing our goals.
We treat other people like we want to be treated. We take care of our environment so others do the same.
We recognize our strengths, learn from our mistakes and assume ownership for our actions.
We work hard and never give up. Even when the work is challenging, we will succeed.
We take care of each other. We help each other. We do not hurt each other physically or emotionally
In September 2012, Starr Detroit Academy opened its doors to approximately 525 kindergarten to fifth grade students from the east side of Metro Detroit. This opening represented the largest opening day enrollment of any Central Michigan University authorized charter school.
In September 2013, Starr did it again expanding to serve sixth grade and approximately 750 students, once again marking the largest second year enrollment of any Central Michigan University authorized charter school.
While achieving record enrollment the “Starr Model” is already demonstrating academic growth. During Starr’s first and second year of operation Starr students made significant academic growth – achieving 1+ years’ growth in Reading and Math.
Since 1913, Starr Commonwealth has been dedicated to the mission of creating positive environments where children and families flourish.
Starr Commonwealth is internationally recognized as a leader in transformational programs for children, families, schools and communities. Starr continues to believe as our founder did in 1913: "There's no such thing as a bad child."
Starr’s community-based programs, residential treatment services, educational services and professional training represent the international standard of excellence in identifying, treating and healing trauma and pain-based behavior and building resiliency in children and adolescents.
In 2009, Starr Commonwealth acquired the Children’s Home of Detroit (CHD) and agreed to continue the Children’s Home’s 172-year history of serving children and families. The acquisition made it possible for the Children’s Home of Detroit’s mission to live on through Starr Detroit Academy.
